Full moons are the perfect time to start over and cleanse yourself of any bad juju that has clung to you. When E asked me if I wanted to join her for a Wicca full moon ritual she found on Meetup, I was ecstatic! Sounds like a blast as well as a great opportunity for me to learn and get ideas for the coven I want to start on campus.
We leave later than we would have liked and worry that we’re going to be late. On the website it said they would start on time no matter what. We get there ten minutes late but it turns out the high priest was also running late so we were fine. We met in front of the Tate Modern, which I loved because it's definitely one of my favorite parts of London. Once everyone was there, we climbed down the stairs into the Thames riverbed; it was low tide. We continued over the rocky ground until we were beneath an outcropping of the pier that extended further.
As the high priest and priestess set up the altar, everyone wandered around the riverbed. The moonlight made it easy to see, and I searched for a rock as a memento. I see a round, white pebble and put it in my pocket (Upon further inspection the next day, it turned out to be a piece of chalk). The high priest called us back to the altar and we formed a circle. He then gave a little background on Wicca and the ritual we were about to do because this was the first ritual for a fair amount of people in the circle. He assigned readings to people for the four elements which were also the four cardinal directions and for the God and Goddess. We then all hold hands to share our energy.
He started by instructing us to plant our feet and imagine roots growing down, grounding us and letting us draw energy from the earth. And then visualize tree branches growing from our shoulders and reaching the stars, allowing us to draw energy from the sky. Throughout the ritual I stretched my imagination listening and visualizing all of the readings. I feel like my brain is working out.
We brushed off all of the negative energy that may have stuck to us over time as the others chanted words of encouragement. I visualized all of the crap that was thrown at me last semester and brushed it off like a shroud falling from my body into the water. I am moving forward.
As the bubble surrounding our circle fades away, the ritual comes to a close. Because of the cold, E and I decided not to stick around for very long after and say goodbye to everyone. Though I had hardly spoke to any of these people before, I felt at peace with them and join as everyone hugs each other goodbye. As I say goodbye to the high priest I thank him for helping me on my journey to starting a coven on campus and he offers all the help he can from abroad. As E and I walk to the tube, I feel re-energized. As an extrovert, I believe the best way to get positive energy is by being surrounded by people who are willing to share their energy. What a fabulous way to start the new year.
